From zero to a Dutch licence

The route is the same for everyone. What changes with us is that every step is explained in a language you are comfortable in.

  1. Theory exam

Pass the CBR theory exam: road rules, hazard perception and traffic insight. You can start your lessons before you have it.

  2. Trial lesson

Sixty minutes in the car with your instructor. You leave knowing roughly how many lessons you need and what that costs.

  3. Lessons in English

Pick-up anywhere in Amsterdam. Your instructor explains everything in English, from the controls to the Dutch right-of-way rules.

  4. Practical exam

You take the practical exam at CBR Sloterdijk. We book it for you and train on the routes around the test centre.

Already driving at home?

Your foreign licence and the Dutch exam

Whether you can swap your licence for a Dutch one depends on where it was issued and on your situation. The RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, decides. Check your case on rdw.nl before you plan anything.

Can't exchange it? Then you take the Dutch theory and practical exams like everyone else. The good news: you already know how to drive. What you need is Amsterdam itself: cyclists on every side, trams, priority to the right and the routes the examiners use.

A very high pass rate. That is no accident.

It comes down to three things we do the same for every student.

  1. One instructor, start to finish

The same instructor from your first lesson to your exam, who knows exactly where you stand.

  2. The real exam routes

You practise on the roads around CBR Sloterdijk, so exam day holds no surprises.

  3. Only when you are ready

We book your exam once you drive safely on your own. And if you fail anyway, we pay for the retake.

Questions expats ask us

Is the whole course really in English?

Yes. Your instructor teaches every lesson in English and prepares you for the CBR exam. You learn the Dutch names of the signs and manoeuvres along the way, so nothing on exam day comes as a surprise.

I already drive at home. Can I exchange my licence?

That depends on the country that issued your licence and on your situation. The RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, decides on exchanges. If yours cannot be exchanged, you take the Dutch theory and practical exams. Experienced drivers usually need far fewer lessons: the trial lesson tells you how many.

How many lessons will I need?

Complete beginners usually need between 25 and 40 lessons. If you have driven before, often a lot fewer. After the trial lesson you get an estimate based on how you actually drive.

Manual or automatic?

Both, at the same price. An automatic usually takes fewer lessons, but you will then only be allowed to drive automatics in the Netherlands. If you pass in a manual car, you can drive both.

How do I pay?

A single lesson costs €62.50. With any package of 10 lessons or more, you pay €52.50 per lesson. You can pay per lesson, in instalments or for the whole package upfront.
